“I am pleased to see our gains in reading and we have continued this upward trend,” said Dr. Susan Moxley, Superintendent of Lake County Schools. “Several schools continued to make significant gains in math. This was a challenging year for math with a new FCAT test, implementation of the Next Generation math standards and textbook adoption. I think our teachers did well in that transition. We will continue enhance our work on instruction in math and reading.”
One of the elementary schools that shined brightly with the new FCAT 2.0 tests, which measures student success with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, was Pine Ridge Elementary in Clermont. It recorded a remarkable 104-point increase in reading scores and a sizable 53-point increase in math scores from the previous year.
“We are very excited,” said Amy Cockcroft, Principal at Pine Ridge Elementary. “I think our hard work paid off. Our teachers knew the test was getting harder so we used harder reading passages and new technology to help students. We also identified students that needed additional assistance and had them in after school for tutoring sessions.”
Another top gainer on the FCAT reading portion was Sawgrass Bay Elementary, which improved its overall score by 90 points. Minneola Charter Elementary (+85), Fruitland Park Elementary (+58), Round Lake Charter Elementary (+55) and Astatula Elementary (+55) all reported significant gains on its math scores.
According to the FLDOE, the third-grade results are the second wave of FCAT scores to be released after the writing scores were unveiled on May 4. The remaining reading, math and science scores for fourth- through 10th-grade students will be released next month. All FCAT results are available online at www.fldoe.org.
