Eustis High’s Special Olympics basketball team will compete again at the Area games on Jan. 12.

Eustis High’s Special Olympics basketball team will compete again at the Area games on Jan. 12.

After a couple months of learning the ropes, Head Coach Adam Bryie and assistant coaches Maja Kieffer and Rachel Archer lead their players to victory.

Eustis High had three athletes participate and place in the individual skills competition, Camrie Smith earned first place, Andrea Adair earned second place and Abbe Anderson earned a third place ribbon.

The division 4 Panther basketball team experienced their first run at a full court game with competition against the Rockets. This was an exhibition game as the Rockets are a division 3 adult team from the county. The team fell short 30-49, but redeemed itself in the second game against division 4 adult team the Dream Team with a final score of 26-18. The team ultimately went home donned with blue first place ribbons.

Several volunteers from Eustis High, especially student Jeoffrey Tackett, have been working with the team all season.

Most Saturday mornings the stadium at Tavares High sits empty recovering from the Friday night lights of the gridiron or the fierce competition on the pitch; as the sun awoke on March 5 so did the stands and field with smiles, camaraderie and sportsmanship.

For the 132 athletes gathering on the field for Lake County Special Olympics this was an opportunity to not only compete but to share in the experience with their friends and family. A longstanding tradition for the School District, Summer Games 2011 includes a variety of events including track & field, soccer skills and volleyball.

Travis Porter (left) from Tavares Middle and Jeff Ferris from Windy Hill Middle compete with a quick dash to the finish line.

According to staff from Lake County Schools, this year’s event was remarkably successful as it featured the most athletes and schools ever to participate and the largest contingency of volunteers to lend a hand. Schools sending athletes to the games included Carver Middle, Lake Hills School, Minneola Elementary, Oak Park Middle, Sorrento Elementary, Tavares High, Tavares Middle, Treadway Elementary, Triangle Elementary and Windy Hill Middle. Independent adult athletes and competitors from Carlton Palms Education Center also participated in the event.

“There were so many new things this year,” said Mary Adamson, Teacher at Lake Hills School who organizes the Lake County Special Olympics. “We welcomed nearly 100 volunteers from Tavares High, Windy Hill Middle, Mount Dora High, AYUSA, Montverde Academy, Kiwanis Club and Leesburg Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta. Students from Montverde Academy provided treat bags and were ‘buddies’ to school-aged athletes, cheering them on in their events.”

In addition, new schools participating this year included Oak Park Middle, Carver Middle, Sorrento Elementary and Windy Hill Middle. While students were not competing in events they could often be found buddying up to a large gathering of PAWS therapy dogs.

Awards were presented to the athletes by Ali Waters from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Robin Meyers, Principal at Lake Hills School, and Laurie Marshall, Lake County Schools Human Resources Executive Director.

Awards were handed out to the following athletes from Lake County Schools:
