Eustis Middle SchoolThe Eustis Middle School Band beat out seven top-rated schools at a Music USA Festival on May 3 at Universal Studios.

According to Band Director Gerry Ricke, the Eustis Middle Mustang Band performed so well that the awards ceremony had to be rearranged. A Music USA official said, “You guys came in here and made music today. You did not come in just to play a bunch of notes.”

The judges had to change the positioning of the trophies. The master of ceremonies at Music USA said it was a first for them. Once judging commenced, Eustis Middle had won all three categories they were competing in, and with a rating of Superior.

After the awards ceremony, the Eustis Mustang Marching Band opened the park during the opening parade.

“We appreciate the chaperones who attended this trip,” Ricke said. “Without volunteers we could not allow these children to compete or walk in the parade. So a big Mustang hug to all of them!”

Schools, organizations, even governments, celebrate JAM with events ranging from free concerts to educational programs.

The Eustis Mustang Jazz Ensemble has been in existence since 1997 and is just one of the many Eustis Middle School Band programs that are under the direction of Gerry Ricke. The band consists of Eustis Middle School seventh and eighth grade band students selected through an audition process. The Eustis Mustang Jazz Ensemble is an award-winning ensemble group playing throughout the county and state. The Jazz Ensemble meets daily during the school day. These students also participate in the advanced concert band and marching band.

The Eustis Mustang Jazz Ensemble has the traditional instrumentation of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section. This group rehearses daily with emphasis on jazz styles, articulations, improvisation, rhythms, terminology, and listening skills. With 19 years at Eustis Middle School, Ricke has developed a program that teaches a variety of big band styles like Swing, Latin, and Jazz Rock. This band has won State and District awards and has received Superior ratings 12 consecutive years.
