While the commencement ceremony for the first class of graduates from Lake County Virtual School was no different than a traditional high school, how the six students went about receiving their high school diplomas was very much atypical.

At the commencement for the first graduating class from Lake County Virtual School included (left to right, back row) Theresa Wirth, Lake Virtual Teacher, Anthony Ashington-Pickett, Alexander Wagner, Nicholas Beaver, Superintendent Dr. Susan Moxley, (front row) Tessie Osteen, Lake County Virtual Manager, Annie Yates, Mariela Gaytan and Alyssa Braddock.

Studying from home while taking online classes six students — Anthony Ashington-Pickett, Nicholas Beaver, Alyssa Braddock, Mariela Gaytan, Alexander Wagner and Annie Yates — earned their high school diplomas in the inaugural graduating class of Lake County Virtual School. In all, nine students graduated from the newly formed virtual school by Lake County Schools in the 2011-2012 school year.

“We’re really excited, proud and happy for all of our students that are working so hard in a virtual world to be here today,” said Tessie Osteen, Lake County Virtual Manager.

Keynote speaker for the commencement program was Dr. Susan Moxley, Superintendent of Lake County Schools.

“We are very proud of our seniors that are represented here,” Dr. Moxley said. “Our students are real trailblazers because they have ventured out in a new arena into a different educational program that is new on the horizon. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to do that.”

For more information about Lake County Virtual School, contact Tessie Osteen at (352) 253-6592 or e-mail osteent@lake.k12.fl.us.
