During the summer months, several standout student-athletes from East Ridge High School are continuing to showcase their dominance on the track; however this time it’s on the national stage.

“The Knights family of East Ridge High is proud of Kaylin Whitney and Terry Jernigan for their outstanding performances at several national track-and-field events this summer,” said Jacob Stein, Assistant Principal at East Ridge High.

At the 10th-annual adidas Grand Prix held on June 14 in New York City, Kaylin Whitney finished first in the High School Girls’ Dream 100m with a result of 11.27 seconds. The Grand Prix is one of the premier track-and-field events in the world as it is the sixth stop on the international IAAF Diamond League circuit and the second stop on the USATF Championship Series. In the professional women’s 100m, Whitney’s time would have been good enough for seventh place. Terry Jernigan also competed in the High School Boys’ Dream 100m and finished third with a result of 10.64 seconds.

According to Coach Larry Ferguson, “Terry slipped in the starting block but recovered to take third and Kaylin ran the fastest race of her life on her way to first place.”

At the Brooks PR Invite in Seattle on June 21, Whitney once again placed first in the 100m with a final result of 11.35 and Jernigan finished in the boys’ 100m dash in second place with 10.41.

“Kaylin clearly established herself as the fastest high schooler in the nation on her way to another first place finish against the top eight best runners in the nation,” Ferguson said. “Terry ran an outstanding race, finishing second behind the second best time in the country this year.”
