Each year, Bright House Sports Network awards the David Logan Scholarship to four high school seniors who excel in athletics and academics. This one-time scholarship is valued at $2,500 and will be given to one male and one female in the Central Florida market and to one male and one female in the Tampa Bay market. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Have earned a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Have participated in athletics
  • Have attended high school within the Bright House Sports Network viewing area

The Air Force Junior ROTC instructors and cadets of Mount Dora High School earned an overall unit assessment score of “Exceeds Standards” – the highest rating attainable during the state wide assessment held on Oct. 22.

The Air Force Junior ROTC inspection is performed on every unit throughout the world, every three years. Some of the areas of focus during inspection include: logistics, curriculum, community service, compliance issues, finance, physical fitness paperwork, information technology, and inventory and classroom management.

“Lt. Col. Ronald Richards and Senior Master Sgt. Gary Ward created a dynamic and supportive learning environment coupled with community outreach,” said Douglas Davenport, Area Coordinator, U.S. Air Force. “The instructors provided outstanding leadership in administering the cadet-centered citizenship program.

“The Mount Dora High School cadets performed exceptionally well and took great pride in leading and accomplishing their unit goals,” said Davenport, “The Mount Dora High School Air Force Junior ROTC citizenship program is making a positive impact on the cadets, the school and community.”

A congratulatory letter was sent to both Lt. Col. Richards and Senior Master Sgt. Ward from Col. Bobby C. Woods, Jr, Director, Air Force Junior ROTC regarding their recent assessment, noting the significance of achieving a rating of “Exceed Standards,” and indicating that it is “no small feat – it takes a team effort and lots of hard work.”

One of the core missions of the Air Force Junior ROTC program is to teach high school students (cadets) character education, student achievement, wellness, leadership and diversity. Collectively, these lessons motivate cadets to be better citizens.

The cheers at Eustis High School today were loud and boisterous as the campus welcomed home its state championship cheerleading squad.

Eustis High SchoolEustis High School competed in the Florida High School Athletic Association Competitive Cheerleading Championship on Thursday evening at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. Competing in the 1A Large Co-Ed finals, Eustis High captured the state title.

“I’m so proud to say we brought home the State Championship for our school, this program, and this community,” said Coach Sarah Rimes. “Through all our many challenges and hardships this year these kids put everything they had out on the floor and came away with what they have rightfully earned. I cannot thank all of you enough for helping us out in so many ways. This has been a lifelong dream of mine and Coach Beth Bonadonna. As both of us are Eustis High Alumni and former cheerleaders for Eustis, this win has a little bit deeper meaning.”

Team members include: Jessica Hoffman, Ashley Higgins, Niesha Weeks, Alexis Allen, Hayley Carroll, Jaliah Maple, Brittany Vaughn, Victoria Grable, Sarah Jordan, Jordan Small, Lauren Levingston, Hannah Conte, Baylie Treves, Emma Rodriguez, Sue Wilson, Kalie Brecklin, Hannah Means, Dustin Carson, Ben Hilliard, Peter Gunterman and Hunter Labarga.

The honor this week for Lake County Schools Student-Athlete goes to Litisha Speights, a senior at East Ridge High School.

Each week Lake County Schools chooses a student who embodies a dedication to athletics as well as academics and extracurricular activities.

Litisha Speights is a two-letter sport athlete, one year of Varsity Volleyball and two years of Varsity Basketball. She is also the basketball team Co-Captain.

Speights is a dedicated student athlete who leads by example. She became this pillar of example for the girls’ basketball team by dedicating herself to weight training, nutrition and working on her post moves during the off-season. As a result, she lost over 70 pounds, and has developed into one of the top inside scorers in Lake County and the state, helping to keep the Lady Knights in championship contention with her consistent output on the court.

She led the Lady Knights to its first district finals in 11 years with a win over Osceola High School, contributing 16 points and 10 rebounds. She is currently averaging 17 points per game, 13 rebounds per game, helping the Lady Knights get to a 21-4 record.

Speights also excels in the classroom with a 3.9 GPA, a regular on the honor roll, and currently volunteers at Cooper Memorial Library. She plans to attend college and major in Early Childhood Education.

She is the daughter of proud mother, Mary Frazier. According to the East Ridge High coaching staff, “Litisha is a great leader for her team and East Ridge. Litisha leads not just in words, but in her actions as well. She is a great person to be around, and it is a joy to coach her.”

The honor this week for Lake County Schools Student-Athlete goes to Rian Barnett, a senior at Lake Minneola High School.

Student-Athlete-RianBarnettEach week Lake County Schools chooses a student who embodies a dedication to athletics as well as academics and extracurricular activities.

Rian Barnett has been captain of the Lake Minneola High varsity soccer team for the past two years. Playing from the center back position he scored 10 goals and had 4 assists this season; 8 goals came in the last two weeks of the season. He currently has a 3.4 GPA and was recently accepted to Florida Gulf Coast University.

The school asked Rian to answer a few questions about his experience on the soccer team:

Q. What has helped make you successful this season?

A. “Knowing it’s senior year, senior year you put it all on the line.”

Q. What has been your best experience so far as a Lake Minneola High School Athlete?

A. “Beating East Ridge last year when we scored a 40-yard goal and scoring two goals to help my team come back to beat South Lake 4-2.”

Q. What makes your team special?

A. “My team is like no other, there are some of us who have played together since we were 5 years old, the togetherness on this team is what has made us successful!”

The honor this week for Lake County Schools Student-Athlete goes to Deanna Denapoli, a senior at South Lake High School.

Student-Athlete-DeannaEach week Lake County Schools chooses a student who embodies a dedication to athletics as well as academics and extracurricular activities.

Deanna Denapoli has been a member of the South Lake High School Varsity Girls’ Basketball Program for all four years. She has started every game for three straight years and been a captain for her junior and senior year. She is currently averaging 12.5 points per game, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists per game, helping the Lady Eagles get to a 9-5 record.

Deanna is also an active member of the National Honor Society and Student Government. She has a 4.3 GPA and currently volunteers at the South Lake Hospital.

“Deanna has been asked to play multiple positions throughout her career at South Lake, and she has always worked extremely hard and done everything she could to help her team win,” said Coach Amanda Shafer.
