At the inaugural Student Angler Federation Florida High School Fishing State Championship this past weekend on Lake Toho in Kissimmee, two Tavares High students placed second to qualify for the 2011 High School Fishing World Finals, July 20-23 in Russellville, Ark., and a chance to compete for thousands in college scholarships and prizes.

Tavares High Team Captain Grady Maynard and Co-Captain David Buckner secured second place with five catches weighing in at 8.8 pounds. They each received Ranger Tournament shirts, a National Guard hat, some bait and a plaque.

The Tavares High Bulldogs barely squeaked by the Bartow High team, which weighed in at 8.78 pounds. Unfortunately, there was no catching first place as the team from Sarasota Military Academy had more than a four-pound lead on its nearest competitors.

The Bass Federation, in partnership with FLW Outdoors, hosted the inaugural high-school event. According to the Bass Federation, student anglers competing in the event were required to take an online test at www.highschoolfishing.org about angler ethics, boater safety and invasive species.
