Third graders at Beverly Shores Elementary recently learned about being good citizens and doing good deeds through their Social Studies lessons and wanted to put it into practice.
The students invited a guest speaker, Joe South, from the non-profit organization Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children who is living in the Dominican Republic. They asked about what the children in the Dominican Republic needed the most and took action. The students over there have very little school supplies from paper and crayons, to pencils being hard to come by so the students decided to conduct a school supply drive.
The students ran the entire supply drive themselves. They passed out the flyers to classes, presented the projects to each class, and checked back with each class on their progress with the collection. With the support of the school they managed to raise enough supplies for 40-45 students.
The students were excited when Joe South arrived for his visit and proud that they had so many supplies to give him for his return. He was able to speak to third, fourth and fifth graders to share about the lifestyle of children in the Dominican Republic and who they were helping with their supplies. He showed how he is able to help others in his community and that the students at Beverly Shores Elementary can help in the Leesburg community.
